I was brought up in Plymouth until the age of 18 when I left to join the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment, prior to this I worked for 2 years as a storeman for the Royal Automobile Club based on Union Street in Plymouth. Here is the first doodle I did that went on view for all the workers to see, there was no stopping me after that...
Drawing and painting is my main hobby, I started doodling from a very young age, I found I could draw characters in comics from memory, my favourite being Desperate Dan, I would practice and show off my doodles every day on the bus to and from school using the misty windows, oh such fun. I later started drawing teachers during lessons. I remember drawing Mr Furlong on the blackboard, I managed to get back to my seat before he entered the room, his expression was a picture in it self. My class mates expected me to ‘be in trouble’ but that was not the case, the drawing remained on the board throughout the lesson. I later learned that Mr Furlong took a photo of the doodle ( he was to my amazement rather pleased with it ) ...
Drawing took a back seat for a while from 1979, I was far too busy getting use to army life. In 1982 my pencil came out of hiding to draw a daily cartoon for the lads on tour in Northern Ireland, a book was produced from these drawings and the book was aptly named after the 2 squadrons B and D that were on tour ( enter stage left) ‘ B-Amaze-D ‘
Prior to leaving the army in 1991 my cartoons were being accepted in National papers such as the SUN and the Daily Mirror, I later used this experience to seek work in this field. In 1992/3 I managed to get a short term contract with the Dorset Echo to draw cartoons on topical news on a weekly basis.
In 2001 Robert Oscar Lenkiewicz was presented with a caricature depicting the famous artist painting a ‘Tramp’ holding a plate of Christmas dinner titled ‘ Dossers annual Christmas dinner‘ (From the 70‘s Robert would generously feed the local down and outs every Christmas at the Bretonside bus station Plymouth) Robert loved this drawing and found my work amusing, in his own words ‘ My dear fellow, I love your style of drawing and clever humour...’
In 2006 whilst working for Babcock Plc I was commissioned to draw Prince Harry and his fellow officers in a group caricature. In 2007 I was commissioned to draw Prince William and his group. Today The Prince Harry and Prince William group caricature hangs on the walls at the Royal residence Highgrove. 4 Limited prints signed by William and Harry can be seen on the walls in the Officers Mess Bovington and Lulworth, Gunnery School Lulwoth and the D&M School Bovington.
I have recently drawn Mungo Jerry (Ray Dorset) and he loves it !!! but not half as much as I love
